Personal development using a software program?

This page is about a specially made software program for your personal development called P.E.A.C.E. It is designed to help everyone who wants to develop him- or herself into a more stable and emotionally strong and healthy personality. Whatever someone has experienced in his life. Whether it is a brain injury or not, a break-up with a partner, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job. No matter what kind of injury, emotional or physical, P.E.A.C.E. has been built with the theory and practice of cognitive behavior therapy for your own personal development.

P.E.A.C.E. stands for Personal Emotions Analyzer using Computerized Editing. It is a highly structured method to writing down your thoughts with which you can learn to control your emotions and behavior in order to improve your own personal strength and your relationship with others. In short: for your own personal development. It is based on principles and techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and I have added some new elements which I developed over the years when working with CBT and patients. Because I could test P.E.A.C.E. on several patients I could determine its usefulness and effectiveness in daily life, for the personal development of these clients. I was astonished how powerful this very simple software program was in helping people to bring order to their emotional and cognitive lives. Just like CBT has shown its efficacy in many patients and for many disorders, P.E.A.C.E. has shown that it is indeed very powerful in guiding people towards more personal growth and more emotional stability.

P.E.A.C.E. has many advantages and I consider it much more powerful in psychotherapy than face-to-face conversations. I firmly believe that in using P.E.A.C.E. your real-life contact with a psychologist of psychiatrist can be reduced significantly. P.E.A.C.E. can NOT replace a skilled therapist completely but works complementary to a good psychotherapist. In the next pages I would like to convince you of its power to improve your own personal strengths, of its ability to reduce your dependency on many psychological contacts and for psychotherapists I would like to argue that it is a very useful tool to give to your patients. The advantages of P.E.A.C.E. for your personal development

The main advantage of P.E.A.C.E. is that you have to write things down and this writing is structurally guided. Writing down your thoughts, emotions, behavior has a healing effect because your brain can be freed of repetitive, nagging, obsessive thoughts. Probably this has a lot to do with the so-called Default Mode Network in your brain. That’s the ‘marketing’ terminology for the fact that our brain never stops working, not in your sleep, not when you are awake, never. This default ‘working process’ seems to repeat things that bother us, that keep triggering our emotions like anger, sadness or anxiety. When repeating these distressing thoughts in our working memory, nothing is really solved because our working memory capacity is too small to work things through. Whenever you write distressing thoughts or emotions down, however, you’ll free your working memory and prevent that such thoughts will be repeated everytime in your Default Mode Network. But writing things down is not enough. It has to be done in a very structured way. In such a way that it will really help you with trying to get control over your emotions and thoughts. In fact, P.E.A.C.E. is a highly structured way to train yourself in thinking, feeling and behaving in a more balanced manner. When you get trained by P.E.A.C.E., you will notice pretty soon that you will get more relaxed and you’ll increase your hope of coping with your stress. In fact, your personal development gets a boost. 

P.E.A.C.E. works because it focuses on your thoughts. The philosophy is the same as in CBT: only thoughts can make us unstable and they can intensify our emotions. And only thoughts can be controlled by ourselves, not our emotions. So training to think realistically (nót positively) is the hallmark of staying emotionally stable and balanced. It will enhance your knowledge about yourself and thereby your personal development. Of course there are many ways to know yourself better, but P.E.A.C.E. is a nice modern way of accomplishing this.

P.E.A.C.E. is non-judgemental: it has no prejudices, it doesn’t frown or laugh at you when you say or think strange things. P.E.A.C.E. is more fun to do and time-efficient. One session with P.E.A.C.E. can make you feel good and doesn’t last 45 minutes. Usually, when having had some experience with P.E.A.C.E., it takes only 10 minutes to do an exercise. Finally, P.E.A.C.E. isn’t a complex computer program. No fancy stuff, very easy to follow through and learn. I have programmed it myself and because my programming skills are that of a hobbyist, P.E.A.C.E. is very basic and a small program. It can run on all platforms.

Last but not least: P.E.A.C.E. will be available for a small fee (developing and maintaining database and website does cost something). So my hope is that I can answer questions about the use of P.E.A.C.E. on this site. My ideal would be that P.E.A.C.E. will be used by many people around and that these users will create their experiences with P.E.A.C.E. and they are invited to share their stories on this site. Then I can be sort of a forum moderator who will answer the big questions about using P.E.A.C.E. and about dealing with thoughts, emotions and so forth.

P.E.A.C.E. can be used by anyone who can read and type. Anyone who has emotional troubles, either quite normal and not in need of a psychotherapist, or emotional troubles for which you are currently receiving psychotherapy. Remember that P.E.A.C.E. is a very powerful tool for self-help, for learning to control your emotions and thoughts, for your personal development. But it is NOT a wonder tool that solves everything! You have to work hard to solve your own problems, with or without a therapist, but P.E.A.C.E. can help you definitely with how to deal with your stresses and problems. 

P.E.A.C.E. is based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy

The main advantage of P.E.A.C.E. is that its methods are completely based on A.T. and J.S. Beck’s theories and methods. They are the well-known and trusted psychotherapists who have given Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) an enormous boost worldwhile. And rightfully so! Because with CBT many emotional problems like depression and anxiety disorders can be treated successfully. Even personality disorders – that were thought to be untreatable – have been treated with CBT. 

CBT is not just one of the many methods to treat emotional problems. It has built a large state of research studies that have shown that not only CBT works, it works usually very well. However…CBT is not a wonder drug. Clients, people with emotional problems have to do a lot of hard work with their psychologist to get results, to gradually see improvements in their personal growth. P.E.A.C.E. has been developed just to make CBT exercises a bit more fun and more efficient and effective. As already been said, most clients prefer the computer program instead of writing things down on paper.

P.E.A.C.E. for everyone?

Well, in fact yes. Of course you already thought I would say that because I sell this program. And yes of course I would like to make some money out of it. But I used to sell it for a higher price in the past. However, I could and cannot accept the fact that so many people are suffering from emotional problems and are not knowing what to do about it. Of course, there are a lot of good self-help books around to be helpful. But reading such books isn’t just that. It is about a training. A highly efficient training in realistic thinking, to learn to regulate your feelings and emotions. That is what CBT is all about, for people who áre in therapy. But there are many more people out there who are nót in therapy but could use an efficient guide to cope with their emotional problems everyday. Using P.E.A.C.E. can teach you that. And it really is very powerful, for those of you who really start training it regularly.

There are some people for who P.E.A.C.E. is not suitable: with an IQ less than about 80. For children below 14 P.E.A.C.E. is probably too difficult to understand, althought there are some who are already very bright. But at least they must be 12 years or more and have to be able to read and type proficiently.

P.E.A.C.E. will ONLY be available as a website. For now it is only in Dutch. The English version will be published later in 2015.
